On this episode we preview the upcoming 2022 NFL Season. Two recent 1st round picks are already changing teams, and guest Tyler Greenawalt from Yahoo Sports joins the show to talk NFL, 2nd year QBs, Patriots Play Calling Duties, Tua's Make or Break Season, Davante Adams and Derek Carr and the rest of the loaded AFC West, Paying Big Money for Wide Receivers and much more!
Today's Guest Tyler Greenawalt Tyler is a Sports Reporter for Yahoo Sports Here are the questions we asked Tyler: • You wrote a great article recently for Yahoo Sports on the 2nd year quarterbacks in the NFL. The 2021 class was pretty disappointing for the most part but as you talk about in the article, history tells us some of these guys could take a big step forward this season, you went beyond opinion and dove into some metrics, what did you find when researching this article? • One 2nd year QB didn't get much time to showcase what he could do and that's of course Trey Lance. He was viewed as a big-time talent who needed more experience under his belt. He was able to sit behind Jimmy Garroppolo last season, this year he gets his chance to start on a great roster with a great offensive minded HC, what do you expect from Lance in year 2? • Mac Jones had the most successful rookie season, but now enters year two without OC Josh McDaniels. Reports are that Joe Judge and Matt Patricia will be handling the offense and neither has any NFL experience on that side of the ball. The media has made this into a big story, this podcast included, but are we all just over reacting or is there legit reason for Patriots fans to hit the panic button? • You also wrote an article on Tua TAGOVAILOA and how it's now or never for him in Miami. You pointed out the reports that the Dolphins were trying to lure Deshaun Watson to Miami, which tells us management isn't sold on him as a franchise QB either. They drafted Jaylen Waddle, trade for Tyreek Hill and upgraded the OL. What will Tua need to do this year to prove he's the guy going forward in Miami? • Sticking with young QBs, Jets QB Zach Wilson made the wrong type of headlines this off season and now is dealing with an injury after week 1 of pre season, at the time of this recording its not quite clear how bad that injury will be but it feels like the the pressure to show progress this season in NY is building, what donthe Jets need to do this year to show the rebuild is working? • I want to touch on another article you did for Yahoo Sports about Derek Carr and Davante Adams, rekindling what they did in college now with the Raiders. The AFC West is loaded but with Adams and new HC Josh McDaniels, who's one of the best offensive minds in the game, how special could this duo and offense be in Las Vegas? • Let's stick with the AFC West, this off season really became an arms race with every team in the division being aggressive and making big moves in free agency, it's become the most talked about division I can recall in a long time, so how do you think it all shakes out this year on the field? • I mentioned Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams, and both were big time acquisitions this offseason, you wrote a story about the shift we've seen in the NFL paying big for established WRs, 2 part question: Why have we seen this shift in NFL team building philosophy? and are the moves worth it? On this episode, College Football is back! Week Zero kicks off this weekend and PGF is going to get you guys ready for the College Football season with this preview episode. Brad tells you 5 college football coaches who he thinks are on the hot seat this season, plus the first "Pick Six" of the year with six betting picks for this weekend's games and guest Shehan Jeyarajah from CBS Sports gets us ready for college football and you might be surprised which team he thinks could fall from the top 3 and which unranked teams he thinks could finish in the top 10.
Today's Guest Shehan Jeyarajah Shehan is a national college football writer for CBS Sports and is a host of "The College Football Survivor Show" podcast. Here are the questions we asked Shehan: • The biggest off season story that I want to get your thoughts on was UCLA and USC joining the Big Ten, what was your reaction to this news? • These 2 schools joining the Big Ten sent shockwaves through college football and makes many of us, myself included believe conference realignment isn't over yet. From what you're hearing, which schools are most likely to move conferences next? • In the last 25 years, only 32 of 75 teams in the AP pre season top 3, actually finished in the top 3, who falls out this season? • Every year we see a couple pre season top 10 teams finish unranked, if you had to make an educated guess for this season, who are those teams? • On average we see 2 teams start the season unranked but finish in the top 10, who could be those teams this year? • The transfer portal in college football has become almost like free agency in the NFL, and just like the NFL some moves make a big impact and some don't Iive up to the hype. Which transfers will make the biggest impact this year in college football? • Every year it seems like more and more freshman enter programs and become big time contributors right away. Who are some freshman at top 25 programs to watch out for this year? • I recently had national recruiting analyst Ryan Wright of Rivals on the podcast and he believes because of the NIL, schools such as Oregon and USC will quote: "Have the opportunity to be major players on the national level" NIL has changed the game off the field for college football, what schools DO you see benefitting the most from NIL deals? • You recently wrote an article for CBS Sports on overrated and underrated teams after the AP Top 25 was released, who's the most overrated and underrated this season? S4E20: Aaron Rodgers Rips Teammates, 5 NFL Players With The Most To Prove, and Guest Kevin Bryant8/20/2022
On this episode Aaron Rodgers is critical of his young wide receivers and host Brad Fowler gives his thoughts on it, Brad shares his 5 NFL players with the most to prove this season and guest Kevin Bryant is on the podcast to talk about his new book "Spies on the Sidelines: The High-Stakes World of NFL Espionage" and you wont believe some of the stories he uncovered when it comes to teams cheating in the NFL.
Today's Guest Kevin Bryant Kevin an Army veteran with over twenty years of experience safeguarding and gathering information for the Department of Defense, including thirteen years as a Special Agent and graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) with a B.A. in History, and graduated with top honors from American Military University with an M.S. in Sports Management and a M.A. in Intelligence Studies. He is the author of the book "Spies on the Sidelines: The High-Stakes World of NFL Espionage" Here are the questions we asked Kevin: • This book, that recently came out, I'm excited to read this. Before we dive into the book itself, I read you have a background in sports management and were also a special agent for the U.S. Government, is that what got you interested in writing this book? • When we hear about NFL spying, most of us think about the Patriots and Spygate, Josh McDaniels also got in some similar trouble when he was the head coach in Denver, but from what I've read about the book, there's a long history of NFL teams trying gain a competitive advantage off the field, so how far back did your research take you? What's the earliest record of NFL spying that you found? • Have you found evidence that the NFL has been actively trying to cover up these types of scandals? • How difficult was it to find these stories and find credible sources? • Some of this book reads like a FBI novel with the level of deception. What was the most high tech story you uncovered for this book? • How many NFL teams did you find out were doing these types of things? • From the information you gathered for this book, did you find any times where teams gained a competitive advantage that was against the NFL rules, that directly impacted the outcome of a playoff or Super Bowl game? • Did you find that these types of actions were being done by primarily coaching staffs or was there ever owners, GMs or players evolved? • What were some of the down right craziest stories you uncovered when researching for this book? • What was the most dangerous attempt to gather information a team, coach ect. attempted? • I cant imagine the NFL is excited about this book. Has anyone from the NFL reached out to you and tried to stop you from releasing this book? On this episode host Brad Fowler gives his College Football Top 10 pre-season rankings, and is joined by special guest Mike Walter, former NFL All-Pro and 3 Time Super Bowl Champion with the San Francisco 49ers. Mike shares some great stories from his NFL career, including playing for legendary coach Bill Walsh, his favorite current NFL player to watch, the most amazing player he ever played against, and much more!
Today's Guest Mike Walter Mike Walter played college football at the University of Oregon where he was named All-Pac 10 (1982). He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1983 NFL Draft and played 10 seasons in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers. He is a 3× Super Bowl champion with the 49ers (XIX, XXIII, XXIV) and was named NFL Second-team All-Pro (1989). Here are the questions we asked Mike: • You played your college ball at the University of Oregon, a team that's grown into a nationally relevant program that competes at a high level year in and year out. Do you still follow the program? and are you proud to see what the program has become? • You were drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2nd round of the '83 draft, you were then waived by them in '84 and picked up by the 49ers where you went one to have a stellar career, but getting waived after one year in the league, did that cause you yo ever have any doubts about your ability and if you could play at that level, or did you always know the Cowboys had made a mistake? • I heard a quote from former Steelers great Joe Greene, he said quote "You've heard people brag about a lot of things. They talk about being in the zone. They don't know what the hell the zone is about. Because you don't live in the zone. You visit the zone, probably once in your life...I played 13 years. I was in the zone one time." Was there a time that you were in the zone, where you felt unstoppable? • You had an incredible career, like I mentioned you were an all pro, you led the 49ers in tackles for 3 consecutive seaosns, and played in a great era of NFL football, who was the best player you ever played against? • You played with so many other great players and several hall of famers, in San Francisco, was there ever times at practice you saw a teammate do something just incredible even mind blowing? • You played for a legendary coach in San Francisco the late great Bill Walsh. He had not only a background in football but boxing as well and I've read he used boxing analogies with his players. He also once said "If you can get everyone to laugh together, You can get everyone to get serious together." What was he like to play for? Any stories about him that stand out in your memory? • I heard about something Bill Walsh started called the Annual 49er Fishing Derby, where they filled a pond with cat fish and you guys all competed to see who could catch the most fish, followed by a bbq, sounds like alot of fun, and a great way to build team chemistry, what was that like? • Like I mentioned in the intro you were a key member of 3 Super Bowl Championship teams, the 1980's 49ers were the team of the decade, a dynasty. Former teammate of yours Harris Barton once said, "success was only measured by winning Super Bowls. It was not get to the playoffs, It was hey, did you win the Super Bowl, and if you didn't win the Super Bowl, you know what, it was a terrible season." What was it like playing for a team with those standards? • Where are your 3 Super Bowl rings right now? • Who are some of your favorite players to watch nowadays? • You played in a different era, a rougher, tougher, version of the NFL than what we see today. Is the game too soft nowadays or is this "safer" version of the game better in your opinion? • What do you miss most about playing in the NFL? • When you were in the NFL, who was the biggest trash talker? • What was the most memorable moment of your career? On this episode, host Brad Fowler talks about some NFL news around the league including Deshaun Watson's suspension, The Dolphins getting busted for tampering and where this franchise is right now, plus his Top 5 NFL Breakout Players for 2022, and he interviews National Recruiting Analyst Ryan Wright (@RWrightRivals) of Rivals.com about college football recruiting.
Today's Guest Ryan Wright Ryan is a National Recruiting Analyst for Rivals.com who specializes in the south east region. Here are the questions we asked Ryan: • I wanna start with some 5 Star quaterbacks, obviously the biggest name is Arch Manning, nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, the number 1 recruit in the nation, he shocked some people and went to Texas. We've been hearing about him for years because of the last name, but what type of QB is Texas getting, where does he really shine? • USC has been creating a lot of buzz after hiring Lincoln Riley and what he brings to the table not only as a coach but as a recruiter, he lands 5 star QB Malachi Nelson, a California kid, Tells us about his game • The other big program out west of course is Oregon who's been recruiting at a high level especially in recent years under Mario Cristobal, now they bring in Dan Lanning from Georgia as the new head coach and he's off to a great start in recruiting, landing 5 star QB Dante Moore, what kind of player did the Ducks get with him? • I mentioned former Oregon coach Mario Cristobal, he now takes over at Miami and has made an instant impact in recruiting, including 4 star QB Jaden Rashada, tell us about him and about Cristobal's 1st recruiting class in Miami • Speaking of new head coaches, Brian Kelly moves on from Notre Dame and Marcus Freeman takes over for him and has the Irish at the top of the class rankings on Rivals.com, who are the big recruits to watch out for in this class? • I mentioned Brian Kelly, he's now the head coach at LSU and they've moved up the recruiting ranks, what has Kelly been able to do in recruiting for the Tigers to have them positioned as a Top 10 recruiting class? • Ohio State has been a powerhouse for years now and they bring in another loaded recruiting class that's as good as any in the nation, tell us about the next group of Buckeyes • Clemson had a down year last season by their high standards but responded with one of the best recruiting classes in the country led by players like DT Peter Woods, and 4 star WR Noble Johnson, tell us about this talented group for the Tigers • I want to finish with some SEC programs, Texas A&M who has been recruiting at a really high level in recent years finds themselves as only the 53rd ranked class, and 10th in the SEC, what's the story behind Texas A&M's recruiting this year, I'm sure Aggies fans aren't excited to see that ranking on sites like Rivals.com • Speaking of SEC rankings, the defending National Champion Georgia Bulldogs are ranked 1st in the SEC and 4th nationally. They have a lot of talent in their own backyard and looks like they capitalized on it this year, who are the the ones to watch for the Bulldogs? • As we know Georgia may be the champs but Alabama is the gold standard in college football and it always starts with recruiting, something Nick Saban and his staff do as well as any program. It looks like they added talent to the secondary and landed QB Eli Holstein who was once a verbal commit to Texas A&M, what can you tell us about this year's class for the Tide? On this episode host Brad Fowler talks about some NFL news around the league, he gives his thoughts on Kyler Murray's contract extension and the clause, and he interviews RJ Ochoa (@rjochoa) of SB Nation about the Dallas Cowboys.
Today's Guest RJ Ochoa RJ Ochoa covers the Dallas Cowboys as the Manager and Editor and Chief of SB Nation's BloggingTheBoys.com, and a host of The Ocho and The SB Nation NFL Show. Here are the questions we asked RJ: There's been alot of discussion in the media this off season about Dak Prescott and if he is or isn't a top 10 QB in the NFL? What's your take? Another high profile player that seems to start alot of debate is CB Trevon Diggs, he had a NFL high 11 interceptions last year but many point to advanced analytics and say he also gave up alot of yards, you cover this team as close as anyone so, is he overrated or underrated? Dallas opens vs Tampa Bay then plays the defending AFC Champion Bengals, they also play the defending Super Bowl Champion LA Rams in week 5, if Dallas starts 0-2, then maybe falls to 1-4, would Mike McCarthy survive that scenario? The running back position has become a interesting topic for Dallas, Zeke Elliott turns 27 going into this season and hasn't looked like the player we saw a few years ago, and Tony Pollard when he's been given more touches, he's provided more results. Does Dallas give him a bigger role in the offense this year? I wanna ask you about the WR group, Amari Cooper is now a Cleveland Brown, multi part question; who becomes the No. 3 option at WR, What is a real time frame for Michael Gallups return? and is CeeDee Lamb ready to be the legit No. 1 WR for this offense? Another key loss this off season for Dallas was Randy Gregory, who was a consistent pass rusher on the edge for the Cowboys who according to PFF had 43 pressures last season to go with his 6 sacks. How does Dallas replace that type of production? The Cowboys caught alot of heat for their draft class from the media, this podcast included, what are your overall thoughts on the class? which picks did you like and not like? Pass Rush vs. Coverage and NFL with guest Dalton Miller7/21/2022
On this episode we talk about NFL players who didn't get contract extensions, pass rush vs coverage and which one is more important, Sean Payton could be coaching again soon and NFL talk with lead football analyst Dalton Miller of Pro Football Network.
Today's Guest Dalton Miller Dalton is the lead football analyst Dalton Miller of Pro Football Network Here are the questions we asked Dalton: • Lamar Jackson’s lack of a contract extension continues. Jackson and the Ravens haven’t reached an agreement on a contract extension, he enters his 5th season with the team, to me it's one of the most interesting stories in the NFL right now. What do make of this story, and will they get a deal done before training camp? • Speaking of deals, we saw some pretty high level players not sign extensions, Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz, Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki, Chiefs Tackle Orlando Brown and Bengals Safety Jessie Bates, how surprised were you that these players didn't reach a deal with their teams? • You wrote an article on Pro Football Network about Pass Rush vs. Coverage, I found it to be really interesting and informative, tells us about this article and what you discovered when writing it? • You also wrote on Pro Football Network about Sean Payton and that his retirement could be short lived, what are you hearing about Payton and where and when could he be coaching next? • Which AFC team and which NFC team is going to surprise people this season? • We saw a lot of big name players move teams this off season, but which one is most likely to underwhelm? • We talked about big names moving teams but what were some under the radar moves teams made, that you think will make a impact this year? • I've asked this question with some recent guests and I love the variety of answers I've gotten, Who's the most over hyped team going into 2022? On this episode, Host Brad Fowler talks about the Chicago Bears trade for N'Keal Harry, the Panthers trade for Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson's contract negotiations, and you won't believe what one NFL analyst said about Deshaun Watson! Brad is also joined by guest Ted Glover who covers the Minnesota Vikings.
Today's Guest Ted Glover Ted formerly covered the Minnesota Vikings, Ohio State Football and Big Ten Football for SB Nation. He currently covers the Minnesota Vikings for "Vikings Report with Drew & Ted" podcast. Here are the questions we asked Ted: • All Pro WR Justin Jefferson recently said quote "the Vikings aren't a run first offense anymore" I cant imagine 3 time pro bowl running back Dalvin Cook was excited about that but how much truth is there to this statement by Jefferson? • Long time head coach Mike Zimmer is out, so tell us about new head coach Kevin O'Connell, what scheme and philosophy changes do you expect to see from the Vikings this season? • With a new coach comes new evaluations, who are some players with the most to prove this season in Minnesota? • The Vikings have added some key free agents this off season on the defensive side of the ball with Zadarius Smith, Harrison Phillips and Jordan Hicks, what type of impact do you expect from these guys? • The most important position in pro sports is the quarterback position, I read an article today on Sports Illustrated's Fan Nation Inside The Vikings website, stating Kirk Cousins as one of the most overrated players in the NFL. Wins aren't a QB stat but he is basically a .500 QB who I think has inflated numbers due to his overly conservative approach, He's getting paid like a top 5 QB and now it looks like the Vikings are offering him another contract extension. What are your thoughts? • We spoke off the air about the Vikings draft, and as you and my listeners already know I wasn't very impressed with what they did, especially getting fleeced by their rivals in some bad draft day trades. Now I really like Lewis Scene, and Andrew Booth Jr. Is really talented but he hasn't been able to stay healthy so I think he was a high risk high reward pick, I thought they really reached for Ed Ingram in the 2nd round who most analysts graded as a 5th round prospect, I have read some positive reports from OTAs on rookie Brian Asamoah, I know you're higher on this class than I am but what are your thoughts on the rookies and the all the draft trades the new GM made? • Speaking of younger players for the Vikings, which 2nd or 3rd year guys do you think are breakout candidates this season? • Next season the Minnesota Vikings win how many games?
