S4E15: NFL Trades, Lamar Jackson's Contract, Deshaun Watson and guest Ted Glover

7/14/2022

On this episode, Host Brad Fowler talks about the Chicago Bears trade for N'Keal Harry, the Panthers trade for Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson's contract negotiations, and you won't believe what one NFL analyst said about Deshaun Watson! Brad is also joined by guest Ted Glover who covers the Minnesota Vikings.

Today's Guest

Ted Glover

Ted formerly covered the Minnesota Vikings, Ohio State Football and Big Ten Football for SB Nation. He currently covers the Minnesota Vikings for "Vikings Report with Drew & Ted" podcast.

Here are the questions we asked Ted:

• All Pro WR Justin Jefferson recently said quote "the Vikings aren't a run first offense anymore" I cant imagine 3 time pro bowl running back Dalvin Cook was excited about that but how much truth is there to this statement by Jefferson?

• Long time head coach Mike Zimmer is out, so tell us about new head coach Kevin O'Connell, what scheme and philosophy changes do you expect to see from the Vikings this season?

• With a new coach comes new evaluations, who are some players with the most to prove this season in Minnesota?

• The Vikings have added some key free agents this off season on the defensive side of the ball with Zadarius Smith, Harrison Phillips and Jordan Hicks, what type of impact do you expect from these guys?

• The most important position in pro sports is the quarterback position, I read an article today on Sports Illustrated's Fan Nation Inside The Vikings website, stating Kirk Cousins as one of the most overrated players in the NFL. Wins aren't a QB stat but he is basically a .500 QB who I think has inflated numbers due to his overly conservative approach, He's getting paid like a top 5 QB and now it looks like the Vikings are offering him another contract extension. What are your thoughts?

• We spoke off the air about the Vikings draft, and as you and my listeners already know I wasn't very impressed with what they did, especially getting fleeced by their rivals in some bad draft day trades. Now I really like Lewis Scene, and Andrew Booth Jr. Is really talented but he hasn't been able to stay healthy so I think he was a high risk high reward pick, I thought they really reached for Ed Ingram in the 2nd round who most analysts graded as a 5th round prospect, I have read some positive reports from OTAs on rookie Brian Asamoah, I know you're higher on this class than I am but what are your thoughts on the rookies and the all the draft trades the new GM made?

• Speaking of younger players for the Vikings, which 2nd or 3rd year guys do you think are breakout candidates this season?

• Next season the Minnesota Vikings win how many games?

S4E14: College Football Super Conferences and NFL Betting with guest David Bearman

7/7/2022

On this episode host Brad Fowler gives his thoughts on UCLA and USC moving to the Big Ten and the shockwaves it has sent through college football, after that he interviews David Bearman the Deputy Editor of Sports Betting at ESPN, to talk NFL futures, over/under season win totals, MVP award odds and more!

Today's Guest

David Bearman

David Bearman is the Deputy Editor of Sports Betting at ESPN. You can find his work on ESPN.com/Chalk and ESPN's "Daily Wager" TV show at 6-7 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.

Here are the questions we asked David:

• It's never too early to start making some futures bets on the NFL. Most books have the Bills as the Super Bowl favorites, What do you make of the Bills being the favorites after they failed to even reach the AFC Championship last year?

• Once we get past Buffalo, the Bucs are +750, followed by the Chiefs +1000, Packers +1100, defending champs the Rams at +1100, AFC West Chargers and Broncos both +1600, so where do you see alot of value? Who are some teams in the 2nd tier or 3rd tier that you think could still win the Super Bowl, and pay off big for bettors?

• Let's look at Week 1, some great matchups to kick off the season. Some lines that stood out to me are Giants +6.5 at Tennessee, Saints are 4 point favorites on the road in Atlanta, 49ers are 6 point favorites on the road in Chicago, lots of interesting lines, what ones stand out to you?

• Like we covered earlier, Bills are the Super Bowl favorites and QB Josh Allen is the MVP favorite, followed by Mahomes, Rodgers, Brady and Justin Herbert to round out the top 5. The next tier is Burrow, Wilson and Stafford all getting +1200 odds or better. From a betting standpoint, who are some guys you would want to bet? and is there a long shot MVP you like this year?

• Lets look at the Over/Under Season win totals. No surprise, Bills, Bucs, Packers are all projected at 11 wins or better, a large group of teams in the 10 win category. Saints at 8 wins to me seems generous, Giants at 7 wins is a bit surprising and alot of buzz about the Jets at 5.5 and people taking the over. What are your thoughts on the win totals and what are some bets you like?

• OPOY/DPOY are always popular futures bets, on offense Cooper Kupp and Jonathan Taylor are favorites, I'm surprised to see Christian McCaffrey and Derrick Henry behind them with age and injury concerns, George Kittle right behind them is interesting. Do you lean favorites here or do you see some names with more value down the board?

• Who are some name you like for DPOY? Last years winner T.J. Watt seems to be a heavy favorite to repeat. Micah Parsons and Aaron Donald are distant 2nd and 3rd best odds. Who should we watch out for here?

• I'm shocked to see Kenny Pickett as the favorite for OROY. Drake London after him followed by Treylon Burks and Jets RB Breece Hall. Deep rookie class, where you play and your opportunities play a big factor, what are you thoughts on OROY?

• DROY odds are led by the top DEs from this class in Aiden Hutchinson, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Travon Walker, but safety Kyle Hamilton is also high on the list, stats and exposure play a role here usually, are those DEs the place to bet are is there other positions that could have better stats that end up winning it like Micah Parsons did at LB last year?

S4E13: NFL Offseason, College Football NIL, Deshaun Watson, 2nd year QBs and more with guest Kaelen Jones

7/2/2022

On this episode host Brad Fowler talks with Kaelen Jones who's formerly of The Ringer, The Athletic and Sports Illustrated but is now the host of History Channel's "Sports History This Week" podcast to discuss College Football NIL, NFL offseason moves including players and coaches, the Deshaun Watson situation, 2nd year quarterbacks and much more.

Today's Guest

Kaelen Jones

Kaelen Jones has worked for The Ringer, The Athletic, and Sports Illustrated. He's currently the host of History Channel's "Sports History This Week" podcast.

Here are the questions we asked Kaelen:

• Tell us about this new podcast your doing with History Channel, what listeners can expect, why this show, and because this is a football audience, what NFL or CFB historical topics do you plan on covering coming up?

• Speaking on sports history, It feels like we're experiencing sports history right now in the early days of the NIL in college sports. I'm all for college athletes having the ability to generate an income for themselves, I think it was long overdue but the ramifications of this move are historic, and have rapidly changed how college sports, in particular college football are operating, what are your thoughts on the current state of the NIL the good and the bad?

• Lots of times the team who wins free agency never wins big on the field, but the team who made some less splashy, under the radar moves often pay off the biggest, but this year had some especially big moves with Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill and Russell Wilson to name a few, What NFL off season signings will have the biggest impact?

• 9 NFL teams are going into this season with new head coaches. Matt Eberflus, Brian Daball, Kevin O'Connell, Mike McDaniel, and Nathaniel Hackett all become 1st time NFL head coaches while Lovie Smith, Doug Pederson, Josh McDaniels, and Dennis Allen are getting another shot at it, What hires have YOU excited? and did any leave you scratching your head?

• We mentioned Josh McDaniels' move from the Patriots OC to head coach of the Raiders, which leaves a big question mark for who's going to be running the offense and calling plays in New England, for a very buttoned up organization, this transition feels messy, at least on the outside looking in, what are your thoughts on the situation?

• Unfortunately the biggest story this off season continues to be QB DeShaun Watson and the sexual assault and misconduct allegations swirling around him. The Browns signed him to a fully guaranteed $230 million dollar contract. No matter what happens off the field from a legal standpoint, I think its safe to say he's going to be suspended from the NFL for what could be, a considerable amount of time, so what % chance do you think that this signing for the Browns blows up entirely in their face?

• The 49ers are giving the keys to Trey Lance and the Browns excused Baker Mayfield from mandatory mini camp so they clearly want to move completely away from him, but it feels like there's a few spots where either guy could be an upgrade under center, Seattle and Carolina being the most talked about. Has the market dried up for guys like Jimmy Garoppolo and Baker Mayfield or do you expect them to be moved before the season starts?

• Which 2nd year qb makes the biggest jump this season?

• What NFL team is getting too much hype going into the season? And what team isn't getting talked about enough that could surprise some people?

S4E12: NFC West Draft Grades and guest Ian Cummings

6/26/2022

On this episode, host Brad Fowler gives out his final draft grades of the year with the NFC West and tells you each teams best pick, and worst pick. He also has a great interview with Ian Cummings (@IC_Draft) of Pro Football Network to put a bow on the draft and take a early look at the 2023 NFL Draft prospects. The NFC West had some really good drafts, an ugly draft and one of the worst draft day trades this off season.

Today's Guest

Ian Cummings

Ian Cummings is a NFL Draft analyst at Pro Football Network

Here are the questions we asked Ian:

• I want to start with a couple questions about the 22 draft and then we'll look ahead to 23, if you had to make a bet on one guy from this class that will go on to become a Hall of Famer, who would it be?

• Let's flip it to the other side, which high first round pick would you bet is most likely to be a bust?

• Which team had the best overall draft? And who had the worst draft?

• You've already been breaking down the prospects for the 2023 NFL Draft, never too early to look ahead, let's start with the top quarterbacks Bryce Young from Alabama and CJ Stroud from Ohio State, tell us about their strengths and weaknesses and how they project as NFL QBs.

• Let's go past the top 2 QBs, who else do we need to watch for under center in college football this season, guys who could also be high draft picks?

• Every year it seems like there's a position group or two that is loaded, what group(s) will that be, next April?

• You've already put out some great scouting reports on some prospects for next season at Pro Football Network, tell us about some guys you're really high on?

S4E11: AFC West Draft Grades

6/26/2022

On today's episode host Brad Fowler grades each team in the AFC West and tells you each team's best pick, and worst pick, he also has a great interview with William McFadden (@willmcfadden) of SB Nation, but first the best division in the NFL might have had the best top to bottom draft classes, which is scary for the rest of the AFC, but one team really crushed it with an "A" grade.

Today's Guest

William McFadden

William McFadden covers the Atlanta Falcons for SB Nation's The Falcoholic and is the host of Believe in Falcons podcast.

Here are the questions we asked William:

• The Falcons are a team in transition, and with at least 10 new starters entering the 2022 season, who are some guys with the most to prove this year?

• Atlanta has moved on from long time starting QB Matt Ryan, they signed veteran Marcus Mariota and drafted Desmond Ridder from Cincinnati, What are you hearing about the QBs from OTAs so far?

• I read a story today on ESPN.com on rookie free agent signing of Jared Bernhardt, who scored a ton at Maryland, but as a member of their LaCrosse team. He's attempting to make the jump to the NFL. We've seen guys pull this off before, Chris Hogan who played for the Patriots and Tom Kennedy who's currently a WR for the Lions. Tell us about Jared Bernhardt and what your hearing coming from the Falcons organization?

• I want to jump to a more high profile rookie WR Drake London from USC. He's a big athletic player who lined up all over the field for the Trojans, but how do expect Atlanta to use him in this offense?

• Another rookie I'm excited to watch this year is 2nd round pick Arnold Ebiketie from Penn State, what have you seen or heard about him so far?

• Last years first round pick TE Kyle Pitts had an incredible rookie campaign, considering how good he was as a rookie, whats a realistic expectation for him in year 2?

• 2020 first round pick AJ Terrell had a breakout season last year and was an all pro, is he the underrated defender in the NFL right now?

• What 2nd or 3rd year Falcons player could be next in line for a breakout season?

• Rookie head coach Arthur Smith came in last season, now enters year 2, what changes do expect to see from him and his staff this season?

• The 2022 Atlanta Falcons will win how many games?

S4E10: NFC EAST DRAFT GRADES

6/12/2022

On this episode host Brad Fowler grades each team in the NFC East and tells you, each team's best pick, and worst pick. He also interviews Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. (@wiltfongjr) who covers the Chicago Bears for SB Nation. The NFC East had some really solid drafts but one team with a huge fan base is not going to like what Brad had to say about their draft!

Today's Guest

Lester A. Wiltfong Jr.

Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. covers the Chicago Bears, He's the editor in chief of SB Nation's Windy City Gridiron, the host of T Formation Conversation, the Co-Host of Bear and Balanced and on YouTube at 2nd City Gridiron.

Here are the questions we asked Lester:

• Let's start with the offense, RB David Montgomery has been a productive back for the Bears. It looks like Chicago's offense is moving to more of a outside zone rushing attack, how does Montgomery's skill set fit into this scheme? and what do expect from him this season?

• The Bears' WR group has lost Allen Robinson but Bears added Byron Pringle, and some other pieces but have they done enough to upgrade the passing attack alongside Darnell Mooney?

• There were high expectations for TE Cole Kmet the former 2nd round pick in 2020, and we saw his targets jump from 46 in yesr one to 89 last season, what do you expect from him in year 3 in Luke Getsy's offense?

• We talked about the offensive playmakers, the big question is 2nd year QB Justin Fields. He had some great moments last season, the games vs the 49ers and Steelers come to mind, but his completion % wasn't great and he had issues turning the ball over, we know he's talented but where does he need to improve this season to show Bears fans he's moving in the right direction?

• Matt Eberflus comes in this year as the new head coach, a first time head coach, former defensive coordinator with the Colts, a defensive guy through and through, and was a hot name in the NFL coaching circles, tell us about Matt Eberflus, and what he brings to the organization?

• The Bears used their first two draft picks on talented defensive backs in cornerback Kyler Gordon from Washington and safety Jaquan Brisker from Penn State.
Chicago's pass defense was pretty weak last season, so I like that they addressed it with these 2 players early in the Draft, tells us about them, and how they fit into the defense?

• The Bears also addressed the OL in this draft which is in need of some talent, talk about the group of rookie offensive lineman and who stands out in this group for you?

• The Bears season win total will be what?

S4E9:AFC EAST DRAFT GRADES

6/12/2022

On this episode host Brad Fowler grades each team from the AFC East and tells you each teams best pick, and worst pick. He also interviews Tyler Walker, who's a scouting assistant for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brad tells what team had one of the best drafts in the entire NFL this year and why the rest of this division, was down right ugly.

Today's Guest

Tyler Walker

Tyler formerly worked for the University of Oregon Football operations and is currently a Jacksonville Jaguars scouting assistant.

Here is the questions we asked Tyler:

• Before you started working for the Jaguars you were with the University of Oregon, a lot of us read stories about Oregon, the facilities and the program but few of us get to see what it's really like, take us behind the curtain if you will?

• While at Oregon you worked with Mario Cristobal, he had a lot of success at U of O and is now the head coach at Miami, tells us about what type of coach, recruiter and just overall guy the Hurricanes are getting with Cristobal?

• The Jaguars have now hired former Eagles coach Doug Pederson, a respected coach with a recent Super Bowl win on his resume, what's it been like working with him?

• The NFL Draft just behind us now, you were involved in scouting these players for Jacksonville, let's start with with Travon Walker, big time athlete but limited production, wasn't seen as a lock for the 1st pick, was there a lot of debate internally in the pre draft process who the Jags would be selecting at 1?

• I think drafting LB Devin Lloyd at the 27th overall pick could be one of the biggest steals in the 1st round, a guy I had ranked as my 9th best player in this entire class, tells us about Lloyd and the move to go get him?

︎• I also really like the 3rd round selections of center Luke Fortner and Chad Muma, tells us about what you saw in scouting them and what they'll bring to the Jaguars?

• Every year we see reports after the draft that fill in the blank team was targeting a certain player, but another team drafts him before they go there chance to, who was that player for the Jaguars?

S4E8: NFC NORTH DRAFT GRADES

5/27/2022

On this episode host Brad Fowler gives his draft grades for each team in the NFC North and tells you each teams best pick and worst pick. Brad also has a great in-depth interview with Donnie Druin (@DonnieDruin) of SI.com. Brad also shares what 3 NFC North teams had great draft classes, and one team's draft was so terrible, he considered giving them an "F"

Today's Guest

Donnie Druin

Donnie Druin covers the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona State Sun Devils for Sports Illustrated's Fan Nation.

Here are the questions we asked Donnie:

• Let's start with the Steelers, for the first time in a long time they went into the draft with question marks at the QB position and decided to draft Kenny Pickett with the 20th pick, what are your thoughts on him and what level of player can he become?

• Historically speaking the Steelers draft really well especially at WR, tell us about George Pickens from Georgia and Calvin Austin from Memphis.

• With free agency and the draft behind us, which teams are poised to take a leap forward this season and who's going to take a step backwards?

• Sticking with the draft, who's your pick for OROY and DROY?

• What draft pick really left you scratching your head?

• Let's shift to Arizona State, RB Rachaad White who went to Tampa Bay with the 91st pick, he's a guy that I was higher than most analysts on during the pre draft process, you covered him up close, what should we expect from him in Tampa?

• Arizona State had several players drafted this year, tell us about the rest of this group and what kind of impacts they can make at the next level?

S4E7: AFC NORTH DRAFT GRADES

5/21/2022

On this episode host Brad Fowler gives out his draft grades for each of the AFC North teams and tells you each teams best pick, and worst pick. Later in the episode Brad interviews J.P. Acosta of Football Outsiders, SB Nation and SI.com to discuss the draft and NFL offseason. Brad also tells you the AFC North team that had a huge swing and miss, while their rival had his highest graded draft EVER!

Today's Guest

J.P. Acosta

J.P. Acosta writes for SB Nation's BigCatCountry.com covering the Jacksonville Jaguars, as well as FootballOutsiders.com, and Sports Illustrated's Wildcats Daily covering Northwestern.

Here are the questions we asked J.P. :

1) Lets start with the Jaguars because this is a team that shocked some people when they selected Travon Walker with the 1st pick, a highly gifted athlete but had limited production, they then went on to draft a highly productive LB in Devin Lloyd from Utah also in the first round, I like the picks they made in the 3rd, but talk about the Jaguars draft as a whole and how would you grade it?

2) You had an article for football outsiders where you stated the Texans biggest need this off season was on the defensive line, they had an opportunity 3 to take arguably the best defensive lineman in this draft with Kayvon Thibodeaux from Oregon but instead went with CB Derek Stingley Jr. from LSU, what did you make of that selection?

2) This draft didn't have a lock for the 1st pick like some classes and there's been a alot of discussion on who was the best player but who had the best pick in this draft?

3) When you combine the off season free agency period with the draft, which team has done the most to improve it's team?

4) Let's flip it to the other side, who's had the worst off season from a free agency and draft standpoint?

5) 5 years from now which 1st round pick will be the biggest bust?

6) Who's a player in this draft that you feel like not enough people are talking about that could become a star?

7) It feels like there is a divide happening in NFL front offices right now on weather or not to pay big for veteran WRs or to let someone else pay them and draft rookie WRs, especially considering how deep the position has become each April. What are your thoughts on this and if you were a GM which way would you lean?

9) With free agency and the draft behind us, what team is being overhyped and who's being overlooked going into next season?

S4E6: NFC South draft grades

5/12/2022

On this episode host Brad Fowler gives his draft grades for the NFC South and tells you each teams best pick and worst pick. Brad also has a great in depth interview with Mark Dulgerian of NFL Media. Plus the NFC South had 2 teams that he thinks crushed the draft and 2 teams that had terrible drafts, and received Brad's worst grades yet!

Today's Guest

Mark Dulgerian

Mark does research and analytics for NFL Media (which includes NFL Network and NFL.com) and works for Optimum Scouting. He was formerly with the XFL as the Director of Pro Scouting and also worked in the football operations at USC.

Here are the questions we asked Mark:

1) You have a background in scouting and like I said in your intro you currently do research and analytics, I'm curious, when you're evaluating these prospects, what are some of the key things you look for from a analytics point of view?

2) We saw Travon Walker and Jordan Davis both go early in the 1st round, players that lacked the typical production you might expect from early picks but have the measurements and traits of high level players, what is your process when evaluating a player and weighing the measurements and traits vs the production and game tape?

3) I saw you did a pick by pick analysis for the mid and late round guys for NFL.com, who are some players from that group that really stand out and you think offer great value for where they were taken?

4) You covered the Shrine Bowl for NFL Media and are involved with the game with Optimum Scouting and got a real close look at the players that attended, who from that game really stood out to you?

5) What team you get drafted too can often play a big role in the success or failure of a rookie in the NFL, so who are some guys that you feel landed in right spot?

6) The New York teams are getting a lot of high draft grades from the media but which team had a great draft that isn't getting talked about enough?

7) This QB class was viewed as down and the NFL teams made that abundantly clear by where they were drafted, who is most likely to become a franchise quarterback from this class or is there one?

8) 5 years from now, what will we remember most from this draft?
