Episode Transcription (1ST HALF): Alright guys, I got a story that I want to start with. It's a story that we've been kind of tracking on here but there's been a recent update. According to Ian Rapoport, Sean Payton is now eyeing just the two L.A. teams as a potential spot where he could return to coaching in the NFL. Now Brandon Staley Look, you guys know how I feel about this guy. I think he's most likely gone after the season, unless the Chargers somehow make the playoffs and make some kind of noise and really get hot here at the end of the year. I think more than likely Staley is gone though, and I think Sean Payton is sitting there eyeing that job for a reason. The fact that he threw the other L.A. team in the mix as far as being the two teams that he's really looking at right now is really interesting because as we know, Sean McVay, the coach of the Rams, he's not going to get fired even though they're having a terrible year. I don't think there's any chance they're gonna get rid of this guy. He's one of the best young coaches in the league. I think he'll be there pretty much as long as he wants to be. But the rumors online and around the media are that Sean McVay might be headed to the TV booth to become a TV analyst. It might just be one of those situations where McVay says, Look, I got my ring, I'm done with this old roster that's clearly peaked and has no real future, no real draft picks. There's really no assets for this team to rebuild with. And maybe he just says screw it. I'm done. I'm gonna go make millions of dollars talking on ESPN or Fox or one of these big TV networks wouldn't surprise me there's definitely been a lot of rumors flying around about that. But it kind of makes me wonder why would Sean Payton want to take over that job either though, because he'd be in the same spot Matthew Stafford looks like his best days are over the rosters old and like I said there's no really quick way to rebuild this team right now because they just don't have the draft picks. They mortgage their future to win a Super Bowl. We've talked about it on this show. But when you look at the Chargers job, that job just makes so much sense. I've said it before. I'll say it again. This would be such a perfect fit for a guy like Sean Payton. I think he knows it. The Chargers have a top five quarterback in the league. Let's face it a young franchise quarterback a huge talent, but they also have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. They've got a lot of good players that they could build around. And quite frankly this team when you look at it on paper, they should be at least at least a 10 win team right now. But somehow Brandon's daily is dragging them down. And here they are a team of fighting to try to get in the playoffs again for the second year in a row. Like I said, unless they somehow get hot at the end of the year. I think Staleys gone in this could be a perfect scenario for a guy like Sean Payton to make his way back into the NFL. I read a story recently that was interesting about Tyreek Hill apparently he opened up on why he left the chiefs to go play for the Miami Dolphins. He said it was a lack of targets. Apparently he said last year quote, there be some games where I get two targets. I get three targets. We go into meetings and my coach would be like, we've got to get you involved. We've got to get you involved. So I'm calling my agent every week after they say some crazy stuff like that, bro, I've got to get out of here Tyreke Hill said this apparently on the Club Shay Shay with Shannon Sharpe. I don't know what that is like Shannon Sharp's podcast or something... But apparently , he told Shannon Sharpe. He also has been on record as saying that he couldn't turn down the money in the big contract offered that he got from Miami, which look, I really appreciate the honesty, quite frankly, the fact that this guy opened up and just said, Look, I want the ball more and I want to make more money and that's why I'm out of here. There's nothing wrong with that. And look, I was kind of critical of Tyreek Hill when he left Kansas City. I never blamed the guy for getting paid and I'm never gonna blame a guy for wanting to get paid. There's nothing wrong with that at all. But my criticism was really the fact that you're gonna leave a guy like Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and go play for an unproven coach and Tua at quarterback. It just seemed like a terrible career decision as far as productivity and being able to be a high level elite receiver when you're walking away from what I think is the best quarterback in the game and probably the best offensive mind maybe the NFL has ever seen. It just seemed like a really head scratching decision from Tyreke hill at the time but look it's paid off there's no doubt about this has really paid off I mean, literally paid off but on the field as well. I mean, he's having a career year he's showing why he needed more targets because this guy has become the go to player for two. He's elevated to a to a level that I didn't know he could reach. He's got 139 targets this year. 100 catches over 1400 yards receiving I mean, he is having a monster year. I said it a few episodes back. This guy should literally be in the MVP conversation for the type of year that he's having. So the Chiefs might be a team that's more of a contender in the AFC he might never get another Super Bowl ring but hey, if you're after targets and cash you accomplish those goals for sure. Micah Parsons went on Von Miller's podcast recently and took a shot at Jalen Hurts. This kind of exploded on the internet. He said quote, is it hurts or the team Von Miller then said I think it's a little bit of both Parsons started laughing pretty hard after he said that and said, quote, it's the system and team. Then he went on to say Myles Sanders, O line. He went on to say when things are off, I gotta say something end quote. Look, he's not wrong. He's not wrong at all for what he said here. And look, Jalen Hurts is having a great year. You guys know that I was critical of this guy when he got drafted. I never believed in him. And for the most part, he's really proved me wrong this year. He's having a great season. I mean, there's really no way around it. He's having a great year. He's one of the guys that's an MVP front runner right now. Those are words I never thought in a million years have come out of my mouth. But I'm also going to side with Micah Parsons here because look is he talking trash? Yeah, but I don't think it's out of line. This team is absolutely loaded. I mean, they have made so many moves and hit on draft picks, and brought in big time free agents. This team I mean, there's not really any holes on this team. I mean, it's really pretty incredible. The running game. And quite frankly, the threat of Jalen Hurts running as well. It just opens up so much downfield for him. Look, I'm not trying to say the guy doesn't make big throws he does. But this offense is so hard to defend when you've got guys like Myles Sanders and that offensive line blocking up front and creating big holes and you've got the RPO game and the play action. You've got big time wide receivers on the outside. AJ Brown is a monster. I mean, he might win MVP. I mean seriously, there's a really good chance at this point that he will but there's still no way that this guy is anywhere near the level of quarterback of a guy like mahomes Allen burrow or even Justin Herbert. There's not a chance that he's even in that discussion. And I completely I completely get what Michael Parsons is saying here. I mean, I get it. Monday Night Football Patriots/Cardinals last week, obviously the big story from that game was Kyler Murray tearing his ACL. pretty unfortunate. You know, you guys know I've been critical of this guy, and I've been critical of the Cardinals really from day one. But I'm never rooting for an injury. I mean, that really sucks. The guy tears his ACL he's gonna be out for a while. But the question now becomes what happens to this team? What happens to the Cardinals? What happens to Kliff Kingsbury. When you look at this situation, it was already trending in the wrong direction. We knew that this team has been a big disappointment. They really have just completely come off the rails since that 7-0 start last season and this injury just kind of feels like the nail in the coffin. It feels like it's over in Arizona. As far as this team in this coach, these players this system, I think it's time to blow this thing up and start over. I really do if I'm the Arizona Cardinals owner, I think you've got to seriously consider getting rid of Steve Keim the GM and getting rid of Kingsbury. You can't get rid of Kyler Murray because of the contract I get that but I think it's time to build a different team and a different system around this guy if they have any chance of trying to put this team back together and making them a legit playoff team tearing an ACL for Kyler Murray this late in the year. I mean, there's a chance that he's not even going to be 100% by week one next year. And so now you have to start really questioning what his future is gonna look like as well. I mean, this is a running scrambling quarterback. That's a huge part of his game. In quite frankly, an injury like this could really change the course of this guy's career. I've said it multiple times. I have no idea why they extended Kingsbury and I have no idea why they let Kyler Murray really strong arm them into a new deal. I just think it's time for the Cardinals owner to just change everything, change everything, bring in a new coach, bring in a new system. trade off some of these players get some draft picks. There's just nothing that we've seen from this group from this regime that shows that it's going in the right direction. And this just feels like the perfect opportunity to say okay, you know what? Time to start over. Right. We're getting late in the year. Hard to believe that week. 15 is around the corner. I decided to come up with my top five NFL breakout players for 22. First guy on my list. Jamal Williams running back for the Lions. This is a guy who finally got his opportunity and he took full advantage of it. I mean, this is a guy who was mostly a backup for the Packers but this year with the Andre swift dealing with injuries. He really got his opportunity to get on the field and be the guy for Detroit and he's having a big time here. I mean, he's on pace to rush for over 1000 yards this year. That'll be the first time in his career and he's been a stud in short yardage. I mean big time player when they need a short yardage. goal to go situation. He's leading the NFL as well with 14 rushing touchdowns. Just a big big time year for Jamal Williams and a big reason why the lions are surging right now. Next on my list. Dexter Lawrence defensive tackle for the Giants. This guy was a 2019 first round pick. We're finally starting to see the potential that we saw when he came out of Clemson. It's all starting to come together for this guy. This guy's coming into his own. He's always been a guy who's been really good against the run. I think that was something that kind of came natural to him. A big body guy really plugs things up in the middle but this year, he's pushing the pocket and he's added a whole nother dimension to his game. Six sacks 20 quarterback hits in 25 quarterback pressures. Jonathan Vilma, analyst for Fox Sports said on a recent broadcast of the giants a couple of weeks ago he came on and he said that Dexter Lawrence is the best defensive tackle in the game right now. And you know what I might agree with them. This guy has been special. Next on my list of breakout players, Tyson Campbell, cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, you can make a legit case for this guy that he's the most improved defender in the entire NFL. Last year is a rookie he got picked on you he really quite frankly looked like a bust. I mean, this is the guy who gave him a lot a lot of yards a lot of catches he really struggled his first year, but this year, man he is putting it together two picks, but it's more than just the two picks. I mean two picks is great, but it's really his coverage. I mean his coverage skills this year had been a elite he's only allowing 5.8 yards per target which is exceptional. If you look a little deeper into his next gen stats. They're elite he's amongst the best in the game as far as coverage in as far as those like I said those advanced metrics. This is a guy who quickly has gone from in the bus conversation to becoming one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the entire NFL in year two. Speaking of year two Talanoa Hufanga, safety for the 49ers another year 2 break out guy 66 tackles four picks including a pick six and a forced fumble so far this year. This guy flies around the field I mean, he makes plays all over the place. I have heard comparisons, multiple analysts and writers have talked about comparing him to Troy Polamalu. Those types of comparisons are big time you're talking about one of the greatest safeties that ever played the game. Now granted, he's not there yet, but I can see the similarities because when you look at his versatility, the way he can cover play, the run can line up in the box, he can line up at Nickel. I mean, this is a guy who just does so many things for that 49ers defense. I understand the comparisons the versatility the playmaking ability, I can kind of see why people would compare him to Troy Polamalu, man, he's having a big time year for the 40. Niners. And last but not least, Teven Jenkins offensive guard for the Bears. This is another guy, second year player here he was a 2021 second round pick which really by the way, just a quick second here, side note that class, man, when you started looking back at that draft class, that class was loaded. I mean, we're starting to see a ton of guys from that draft class that are making a huge, huge impact in the NFL. I'm starting to think that like three or four years from now, we're going to look back at that class and see a lot of Pro Bowlers in some future Hall of Famers in this class because man, there are some guys really starting to take off from that class. A ton of first round picks a ton of mid round picks anyway, but Teven Jenkins came out of that class. This is a guy who, once again, he makes the breakout player list for me, because this is a guy that a lot of people coming into the year they thought he actually could get cut, or maybe traded from the bears. That's how bad he was year one year two. He's made a huge huge improvement up front protecting Justin Fields, especially in pass coverage. He's been outstanding up front, only given up to sacks all year. Really cool to see this guy coming into his own in year two. All right with the NFL playoff picture starting to come into focus here. we're winding down. We're getting closer. I know you guys are getting excited. We're starting to kind of see who these playoff teams are going to be. We're starting to kind of see the contenders starting to emerge here. And it got me thinking who are the teams that I think legitimately could win the Super Bowl. I came up with six teams that I think are the legit contenders right now to win it all. And number six, the Dallas Cowboys. This is a team that's got playmakers at a lot of different positions. They're loaded at running back and wide receiver they've got a big time playmaker and Cee Dee lamb. You could question the depth they've addressed that recently by bringing on T.Y. Hilton. I get it a guy that's not you know a superstar or anything but I understand the move. They've got playmakers at tight end and the defense. He's got big time playmakers as well that defense is one of the best units in the NFL. Not a lot of holes on this roster. What makes it tough for them is because of the Eagles they're gonna have to win on the road, and winning on the road in the playoffs is going to be tough. But this is the kind of team that I think has enough talent to be in this discussion. Now. I have a hard time trusting this team, when it comes to a big game spot. Dak Prescott, still question marks for me. Look, he's a good quarterback. He's a really solid quarterback. But he's not a great quarterback but the team around him I think is good enough to make this list. Number five, the 49ers as we know the quarterback is probably the biggest question mark for this team. But so far so good with Brock Purdy. This guy's looked pretty good. But here's the other thing. Quarterback has really never been the strength of this of this team anyway, since Kyle Shanahan has been there, and this is a team that's made runs before they've made deep playoff runs with average to above average quarterback play in the past. So we know as long as Brock Purdy doesn't lose games for this team. They're going to be in just about every game because they're that good. They're clicking at the right time right now. This team is really playing some awesome football. Maybe maybe the best roster in the entire NFL. The best defense in the NFL for sure. Not to mention Great play calling on both sides of the ball. And number four, the Eagles look I can already hear you guys now. I can already hear the Philly fans yelling at me right now when they heard number four Eagles look, best record in the league. I get it. I just talked about how loaded this team is. I've talked about Jalen Hurts. Jalen hertz improvement has been almost hard to believe. I mean, this guy has made huge, huge steps. There's no doubt about that. I can't deny that one bit. But with the team this loaded around him. It can make it look easy at times. This team has got weapons just about everywhere. offensive weapons weapons on all three levels of the defense they're really good on both lines of scrimmage. I think that's really the secret sauce to this team is that the D line and the O line are both elite. I think really the only hope for this team if you want to, if you could even find one would be that the rush defense at times has been a little bit suspect. And I think that's why and I said this a while back I said this few weeks ago on here. I think that's why the Niners could be a really scary matchup for them. But the reason I've got them at number four is because the three teams in front of them, I think, just have something that that team doesn't have starting with number three, the Cincinnati Bengals, Joe Burrow is playing at an MVP level. I mean, this guy has just been absolutely light out. The second half of the season in this wide receiver group is just going to be scary good. I mean, this this wide receiver group and this offense is going to be a really big problem for really anyone they face. They can put up points on anybody they can put up points in a hurry. And when Joe burrow is playing at the level he's playing with those kinds of targets. It's just a tough, tough matchup. But here's the other thing about the Bengals and what I like DJ Reader in that defense at defensive line, men they are starting to really become a tough group to deal with, especially up front. So when you look at the defense and you look at how good that offense is, this is starting to feel more and more like a really complete football team. They've won five straight and they are really starting to get hot when it matters most heading into the playoffs. And number two, the preseason favorites, the Buffalo Bills, look these three teams at the top what really separates them from the Eagles was the quarterback position. And once again, I'm not trying to take shots at Jalen Hurts. It's just I don't put him in the class of these other guys. And I think when you're talking about playoff football, you're talking about the biggest moments when you gotta have it on third and long. You've got to thread the needle and make big time plays from the pocket. I trust these three guys more than I trust him in with the Buffalo Bills Josh Allen Yeah. There's times are sometimes he tries to thread the needle a little too much. Sometimes you can throw pigs because of it. But the guy is just so elite and so scary have a talent such a big time arm. He can make big time throws at any point in the game and get his team back into any type of football game in any situation. I mean, this is this is a quarterback that quite frankly is about as scary as any quarterback in the league for a defense to face, especially when you add in the his ability to run the football. I mean, it's just a really tough matchup. Guys like Stefon Diggs, who's maybe the best route runner in the entire NFL a big time elite receiver on the outside. It's just uh they're just going to be a tough out I mean, no matter how you slice it now the Von Miller injury definitely hurts. I don't think that front seven is quite as dangerous as it was when he was up there. In that pass rush is definitely lacking something without him but only the 49ers give up less points than that builds defense. So this once again, like I talked about the Bengals, This is a very complete football team. But when it comes to playoffs and you're talking about Super Bowl runs, there's no team that I trust more in a big game than Patrick Mahomes. And Andy Reid, is still the best quarterback in the NFL. Reid is still an elite play designer and probably the best play caller in the entire NFL. Travis Kelce is still the NFL is the biggest mismatch. Now they lost Tyreke hill but this wide receiver group is deep. They've got weapons all over the place. They've really made up for it with all the guys they brought in. Now the defense can be a little bit hot and cold at times kind of a bend don't break type of defense sometimes, but like the offense, this defense tends to really show up when it matters. Now Philly Buffalo and the 40 Niners you get all make a strong case they have better rosters. I get that but once again, when I'm talking about playoff runs, I'm talking about Super Bowl runs here. I'm talking about who do I trust who's got the experience who's got the bigger difference makers. That's Mahomes and Amy Reed, I'm still going to put them above the rest of the contenders.
